I’ve been married to Drew for 8 years, and we have 2 sons - Clark (3yr) and Luke (10mo). I am originally from Kentucky, but I’ve lived in Texas for 10 years. I work from home, running my own candle shop (Fragrant Offering) and writing a Christian blog (Liv Free Today). We have been at Lighthouse for almost 3 years. We lead an amazing life group and are actively involved in men/women Bible studies. To us, Lighthouse means home and community.
Psalm 34 is one of my favorite Psalms because it reminds me of the Lord’s goodness, even in times of turmoil, grief and doubt. No matter what may be going on in my life and circumstances, God remains unchanging - good, faithful, loving, kind, gracious, compassionate, merciful and slow to anger (Exodus 34:6-7). Our circumstances do not alter His character. And, because of this, we can and should praise the Lord at ALL times.
God brought this Psalm to my mind during a time of darkness when my life was being threatened. Fear swallowed me and despair surrounded me. That's why verse 4 speaks to me so deeply: "I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears." God is bigger than our fears, and His perfect love casts out all fear (1 John 4:18). In my brokenness, God met me in a very real and tender way. Verse 18 says that He is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. It was here, in this closeness, that my faith was sharpened and my trust deepened. He enveloped me with His never-ending, unfailing, steadfast love, even when I turned from Him. "When we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself" (2 Timothy 2:13).
Verse 8 says, “taste and see that the Lord is good.” When we experience the Lord, meaning when we seek to know Him, His goodness will be evident because it is who He is. We will never be disappointed or left wanting when we press into our heavenly Father. I would encourage you to press into God through whatever you may be going through right now. If the darkness of your circumstances are overshadowing His goodness, draw near to Him and He will draw near to you, extinguishing the darkness with the light of His presence and covering you with His unending love (James 4:8, John 1:5, Psalm 139:11-12, John 8:12, Jeremiah 31:3, Romans 8:35-38, Ephesians 3:17-19).
Father God, thank you for your goodness and faithfulness. Let your praise continually be on my lips. In the good, in the bad, in the mundane. Be forever glorified through it all. No matter what mountain I face, your presence goes with me and pierces the darkness that encamps around me. Lord, I ask that you incline my heart to pursue you with abandon. When I don't feel like seeking you, give me the desire to press into you anyway. When I'm sad or burdened, guide me to seek refuge in you and you alone. When I'm angry and disappointed, give me eyes to see your goodness and faithfulness. Thank you for remaining unchangeable in a world that is ever changing. In Jesus' name, amen.
